Summer Sips—Gimme the Acid!

When the heat cranks up, it’s time to cool off with a glass of refreshing white wine. My preference is to turn to high acid whites from cooler grape growing regions of the world. These higher acid wines offer more “refreshment” than flabby, high alcohol wines from warmer growing regions, like California.

Crisp Spanish Whites—from Catalonia and the Basque Region

I love wines from Spain and some of the most exciting whites are produced in the Catalonia Region near Barcelona and the Basque Region of Northwest Spain.

Taste: Blanc Pescador, Emporada, Spain

Wines from the Finger Lakes, New York

The Finger Lakes of New York have the perfect climate for high acid white wines. Among the best are dry Rieslings and dry Vidal Blanc wines. The SHINDIG White is a special wine because I work to create the final blend with winemaker Alie Shaper from Brooklyn Oenology. It may be selfish to say, but the idea behind the wine is something I would like to drink on a hot summer day.

Groooovy Gruner Veltliner from Austria

Gruner Veltliner or Gruner is the main white grape grown in Austria and produces wines that some compare to Pinot Grigio. The hallmark difference is that Gruner has a spicy white pepper thing going on that I really enjoy. Gruner usually has more depth of flavor than inexpensive Pinot Grigio from Italy.

Whites from Alto Adige region of Italy

The Alto Adige region of Northern Italy used to be part of Austria before World War I and many of the wines have German names or are made with German grapes, like Riesling or Muller Thurgau. Because of its higher elevation and mountainous terrain, the grapes grown here tend to retain a good deal of natural acidity which leads to refreshing summer sippers.
