Celebrity Wines and Fall Wine Ideas
Seems like everyone is getting into the winemaking act. Dave Matthews of the Dave Matthews Band. Maynard Keenan of Tool. Even Dan Aykroyd is making a go of it in Canada’s Niagara Peninsula.
But are these star power wines any good or just a lot of hype? Lets sample and find out!
And luckily, even though we have 2 whites today, these can definitely stand up to Fall foods and the Thanksgiving table.
Arizona Stronghold ‘TAZI’ White, Cochise County, Southeastern Arizona

This is one of Maynard Keenan’s wines. He has 2 projects—Caduceus Cellars/Merkin Vineyards and Arizona Stronghold. The wine is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Malvasia. Think of it as the Arizona version of Conundrum—big and lush with note of honeysuckle, apricot and mandarin orange. Very smooth and sultry in the mouth.

Blenheim Viognier, Monticello, Virginia

This wine is from Dave Matthews’ winery near Charlottesville, Virginia. This is a beautiful and lush white—notes of honeysuckle, Asian pear, white peach plus a whiff of vanilla spice.

Wine Ideas for Fall
I always look toward medium-bodied and earthy reds or full-bodied whites to pair to Fall inspired cuisine. Reds like Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Grenache and even Syrah work well with the often earthy flavors found in game meats and fall plate trimmings.
Vino50 Petit Verdot, Lake County, California
http://www.vino50.com/
This is Andrew’s new private label wine brand that celebrates the 50 states of wine. Petit Verdot is rarely seen as a wine on its own—normally it’s a grape blended with other grapes, like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. It’s a BIG wine—but its still soft and earthy. Dark fruit prevails plus lots of leather, earth and vanilla spice. Very silky texture. You need a big slab of venison or beef for this one kids
