Wine Broad "Andy" Stover with Fall Wines

Broadminded with Chiefwino, Andrew Stover Sommelier from OYA Restaurant, www.oyadc.com, SEI Restaurant, www.seirestaurant.com and the NEW SAX Restaurant & Lounge, www.saxwdc.com. Founder of Vino50 Selections, www.vino50.com and Chiefwino wine blog, www.chiefwino.com BIG REDS!! The weather is a changing. Leaves are falling. That can only mean one thing…. Time to get out the BIG REDS! Reds for heartier fall/winter fare and curling up next to the fire . Montepulciano from Italy I love weird grapes and not that Montepulciano is weird per se, the grape has not quite hit the mainstream like Merlot and Malbec. Cultivated in central Italy to the west of Rome, Montepulciano makes a BIG red that reminds me of Merlot or Malbec with its soft and supple texture but often with a freshness and minerality not found in the other 2 types of wine. Pair with some roast game meat or even game foul. Partridge anyone? Taste: San Lorenzo Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Italy SRP $11.99 Find: http://www.siemawines.com/product-portfolio/italy/abruzzi/san-lorenzo/ Merlot Ever since the hit movie Sideways, Merlot sales have been in the toilet for better or for worse. I don’t get it. Here is a grape that produces a big red that is also soft and supple. I cringe when someone says to me “I HATE Merlot.” I always assume they’ve had some bad Merlot from somewhere as there are certainly less than stellar bottlings floating about but this is true of almost any type of wine. There’s even BAD Champagne on the market. GASP! For a change, try and get your hands on some Merlot from Virginia. The grape does well in some vineyards and tastes more like a French wine that a big California fruit bomb. If you like the Merlot based blends from the right bank of Bordeaux (Like St. Emilion or Pomerol), these wines are for you. Good examples can be found from Breaux Vineyards, Boxwood Winery, Barboursville Vineyards and King Family Vineyards. Taste: Boxwood ‘Trellis’ Merlot Blend, Middleburg, Virginia SRP $20 Find: http://www.boxwoodwinery.com MALBEC I probably don’t even need to mention Malbec but the popularity of this big red seems unstoppable. With the help of the favorable exchange rate with the Argentine Peso and assistance in promoting from the Argentine Government, Malbec has become an international superstar among the red wine drinking crowd. But buyer beware, there is much not so amazing Malbec on the market, often in those really inexpensive bottles lurking under $10 a bottle. I tend to find the $12-20 range usually gets you a good example of Malbec with enough fruit to balance the often heavy use of oak and I don’t mean barrels; think wood chips kids. Taste: Ruca Malen Malbec Reserva, Mendoza, Argentina SRP $18 AND Chateau Saint Didier Parnac ‘Prieure de Cenac’, Cahors, France SRP $25 Find: http://opiciwines.com/wine/ruca-malen/malbec-reserva/2008/ Find: http://buyingguide.winemag.com/catalog/chateau-saint-didier-parnac-2009-prieure-de-cenac-malbec-cahors Tip: Malbec isn’t native to Argentina but rather the southwest of France. It found its way to northern Italy and THEN to Argentina by way of Italian immigrants. CABERNET SAUVIGNON This big daddy grape probably does not need much introduction or explanation but let’s just say if BIG RED is your game, then Cabernet Sauvignon is your match. I’ve been exploring the Cabernet Sauvignon from Washington State recently and find they are ever more impressive than comparable wines from California, especially in the mid-price range. I tend to enjoy the slightly more refined style found from Washington State, especially the texture. Many are often super soft and supple and perfectly enjoyed on their own but better when paired to a grilled steak. Taste: Six Prong Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills, Washington SRP $23.99 Find: http://www.washingtonwine.org/wineries/six-prong/wines/six-prong-cabernet-sauvignon/

Summer Wines with our Wine Broad

Broadminded with Chiefwino, Andrew Stover Sommelier from OYA Restaurant, www.oyadc.com, SEI Restaurant, www.seirestaurant.com and the NEW SAX Restaurant & Lounge, www.saxwdc.com. Founder of Vino50 Selections, www.vino50.com and Chiefwino wine blog, www.chiefwino.com Summer Sips—Gimme the Acid! When the heat cranks up, it’s time to cool off with a glass of refreshing white wine or chilled red. My preference is to turn to high acid whites from cooler grape growing regions of the world. These higher acid wines offer more “refreshment” than flabby, high alcohol wines from warmer growing regions, like California. Groooovy Gruner Veltliner from Austria Gruner Veltliner or Gruner is the main white grape grown in Austria and produces wines that some compare to Pinot Grigio. The hallmark difference is that Gruner has a spicy white pepper thing going on that I really enjoy. Gruner usually has more depth of flavor than inexpensive Pinot Grigio from Italy. Taste: Love Over Money Gruner Veltliner, Austria Find: http://boutiquewines.info/winery.php?id=93&country_id=4 SUMMER OF RIESLING! The word Riesling usually conjures up images of sickly, sticky and sweet white wines for many. Au Contraire Mon Fraire, not all Rieslings are sweet. Some of the best white wines for sipping on a hot summer day are the “dry” style of Riesling. We use the word dry in wine geek speak to denote the fact that the wine has no residual sugar. Look for wines that have the word “dry” on the label or “trocken” if a german wine. Also many Riesling producers are now using the International Riesling Foundation’s sweetness scale that shows a range of sweetness levels on the label and where the particular wine in question ranks. Look for Rieslings from Finger Lakes, New York; Northern Michigan; Oregon; Washington; Alsace, France and even New Zealand. Plus if you ARE a Riesling fan, you are in luck. Summer of Riesling 2012 is in full effect across the USA at many restaurants, wine bars and wine shops. Visit the website, www.summerofriesling.com or @summerriesling on twitter to find out where. Taste: Chateau Grand Traverse ‘Whole Cluster’ Riesling, Old Mission Peninsula, Michigan Find: http://www.cgtwines.com DRY ROSE Stop thinking that pink wines are sweet. If the wine is pink and doesn’t have the words “blush” or “white zin” on the label, chances are the wine is “dry” and perfectly suited to your palate. When in doubt, of course inquire. American’s have this affinity to see pink wine and instantly assume the wine is sweet. This is sad given that the category of rose wine is another ultimate summer sip and also pairs amazingly well with the flavors of summer. Look for rose wines from France, Italy, Spain, Argentina and various regions across the USA. Taste: YinYang Pinot Grigio Rose, Willamette Valley, Oregon Find: http://amityvineyards.com/ Tip: Its not listed on their website, so inquire within. It’s a special wine ;) LIGHT BODIED REDS—CHILLED! Sometimes the task at hand calls for a red wine, especially for those who simply refuse to drink white. Have no fear, Stover is here! A light and juicy red is absolutely find to enjoy on a hot summer day, especially if you are grilling burgers or enjoying barbecue. Ask your local shop for a really light red with low tannins, preferably something that can take a good chill. Good examples include Pinot Noir, Barbera from Italy, Dolcetto from Italy, Cotes du Rhone Red Blends from France and even lighter Zinfandels from California. Chill down approximately 20-30 minutes before serving. If you find the wine too cold, know it WILL warm up. Taste: McPherson Cellars ‘Tre Colore’ Rhone Style Red Blend, High Plains, Texas Find: http://www.mcphersoncellars.com

Our Fitness Broad has wise words or word

Feeling blah about February?
By Fitness Broad, Leigh Anne Adusei

No need to panic. It happens to the best of us. January starts strong and then February hits and you are struggling. I think the problem is the FEB in February.

F Feeling like you’re flailing? Fighting to get motivated?
E Excuses coming out of your mouth for why you are aren’t at the gym or eating right?
B Bored w/ your routine or your goals?

Well don’t blame all of February for the current state of affairs with your health and fitness. You just need to tweak it a bit and change how you look at it. You can find the solution to your problem in FEB as well.

F Find something fun to do/or at least some fun friends to help you get through the workouts together.

E Entice yourself to do it. Set up a little reward system for steps in the right direction at least until you can “see” the rewards for yourself.

B Believe it. You have to believe to achieve. You have to think it’s actually going to work to put the necessary effort and discipline into it to make it work.

So I am sure you are interested in more than just these cute pneumonic devices right? You want real concrete action items to help you achieve your goals. Well just go back to FEB.

F Find time for your Five parts – Chest, Back, Arms (Biceps & Triceps), Legs (Quads, Hamstrings, Glutes) and Abs. Full body strength training twice a week will improve your lean muscle mass, metabolism, posture and bone density.

E Eating Plan. You need one. Why? You plan to fail when you fail to plan! You can get started with a commercial eating plan like Weight Watcher, Jenny Craig or Nutrisystem, or come up with something on your own. You can visit mayoclinic.com or nutritiondata.com or sparkpeople.com and use their online calculators to figure out how many calories a day you should be taking in and then plan your meals accordingly. If you need help, I am only a click away at thankfullyfit.com

B Burn calories. Get your sweat on! The higher the intensity the more calories you can burn in a shorter period of time. But if you aren’t ready for high intensity go more moderate, but the trade off is you will have to go longer to burn the same amount of calories as a real sweat fest. But remember something is better than nothing. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommends 150 minutes per week for moderate benefits and 300 minutes for even greater benefits. It doesn’t have to be all at once. A 30 minute workout can be broken up into 3
(10) minute sessions.

BUBBLE BUBBLE!

Bubbles for the Holidays

Bubbly can turn an ordinary gathering into something extraordinary. It pairs well with a variety of foods and just adds a little extra OOMP to the occasion.

If Champagne is too pricey, and likely it is at roughly $35-40 a pop, don’t despair as there are plenty of other bubblies available that won’t break the bank.

Here are some general categories to seek out at your favorite wine purveyor:

Cremant de Borgogne: These are sparklers from the Burgundy region of France and often have all the finesse of a fine Champagne at roughly half the cost.

Cremant d’Alsace: These bubblies hail from the Alsace region of eastern France and are also quite comparable to Champagne.

Cava: This is Spanish bubbly made in the same manner as Champagne. Generally, Cava is not as complex and often more floral and fruity.

Prosecco: From Northern Italy, Prosecco is a fresh and light bubbly that is also a good base for Champagne cocktails.

Domestic Bubblies: A wide range are available on the market and while some of the less expensive versions are often not high quality, its best to inquire with your wine purveyor on their better selections in your price range. A few domestic producers of note:

Gruet—New Mexico
J Vineyards—California
Schramsburg—California
Pacific Echo—California
Roderer Estate—California
Kluge—Virginia
Horton—Virginia
Thibaut-Janisson—Virginia
L. Mawby—Michigan
Sakonnet—Rhode Island
Westport Rivers—Massachusetts
Argyle—Oregon
Wolffer Estate—New York

Thanksgiving Wine Tips from our wine broad

BROADMINDED with Chiefwino, Andrew Stover
Sommelier from OYA Restaurant, www.oyadc.com,
SEI Restaurant, www.seirestaurant.com
and the NEW SAX Restaurant & Lounge, www.saxwdc.com.

THANKSGIVING WINE TIPS

Gobble Gobble!

Choosing wine for Thanksgiving means trying to pair a wide variety of flavors. Salty, sweet, creamy, herby…it’s a real Smörgåsbord of flavors.

I usually recommend to go with your personal preference but know that this is not the time for buttery, creamy California Chardonnay or big and rich Cabernet Sauvignons.

Typically, sparkling wine is usually the best overall pairing to a wide variety of flavors but if bubbly isn’t your gig, the following types of wines tend to pair best with the flavors found on the Thanksgiving table. Since Thanksgiving is an AMERICAN holiday, try to drink something from the good ‘ol U.S.A!

Whites:
Riesling with a hint of sweetness
Gewurztraminer
Albarino
Viognier

Reds:
Pinot Noir
Zinfandel
Syrah/Shiraz

Rose, drier and less fruitier styles

Tedeschi Vineyards ‘Hula O Maui’ Sparkling Pineapple, Maui, Hawaii
Average Retail Price: 24.99
www.mauiwine.com

An amazing dry, Champagne-like pineapple sparkling wine that works especially well with ham laced with pineapple as well as fruitier dishes on the Thanksgiving table.

Tarara Winery Viognier, Loudoun County, Virginia
Average Retail Price: 16.99
www.tarara.com

An alternative to Chardonnay with notes of white flower, honeysuckle and tropical fruit, plus passion fruit and mango on the finish, smooth and luscious. The fruity notes in the wine pair well with fruitier flavors found in Thanksgiving dishes.

Casa Larga ‘Vineyard Hill’ Riesling, Finger Lakes, New York
Average Retail Price: 9.99
www.casalarga.com

If you like your Riesling a little on the sweeter side, this one is for you—fresh and floral, notes of rose petal, lime zest, white peach and grapefruit, luscious texture with a semi-sweet finish. Riesling works well with sweet potatoes, ham, turkey and anything with a slightly sweet edge.

Amity Vineyards Organic/Sulfite Free Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Average Retail Price: 19.99
www.amityvineyards.com

Pinot Noir is often a pretty versatile wine and pairs nicely with dark meat Turkey with herb stuffing but also works with ham, lamb or beef. Bright cherry notes with slight earth undertones. Very juicy and easy to drink. Plus this wine is not only organic but sulfite free for those that are sensitive to sulphur.

Sawtooth Syrah, Snake River Valley, Idaho
Average Retail Price: 15.99
www.sawtoothwinery.com

Rich and brooding aromas of chocolate, cedar, dark plums, hint of earth. An explosion of black cherry and chocolate in the mouth, rich and velvety finish. The peppery notes in the wine pair well with herb stuffing and while not an overly heavy wine, Syrah will please any big Cabernet lover.

ZZ Top’s Billy gibbons joins the “unity for vets” concert
featuring bret michaels with ellis hall, the unity all-star band plus special guests!

NEW YORK, New York (October 27, 2011). HonorVet.org announced today that ZZ Top Guitarist and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Billy Gibbons, will join rock star performer and “Celebrity Apprentice” winner Bret Michaels and his “Get Your Rock On Tour” with the All-Star line-up that includes Ellis Hall and other special Celebrity guests for the “Unity for Vets” concert on Veterans Day at New York’s NYCB Theatre at Westbury, November 11th.
Produced in partnership with financially transparent rock philanthropy Unityfor.org, the concert will be honoring and supporting America’s veterans and current service members as they raise awareness and funds to finance their dedicated support community for vets.
Proceeds from the concert, leveraging UnityFor.org’s ultra low-cost production costs, will be transparently dedicated to HonorVet.org which will directly finance crucial resources and services instantly available to qualified Veterans, service members, and their families, without the usual red tape.
HonorVet.org is a national 501(c) (3) which was co-founded by two US Marines, Jesse Canella and Jim McCain, who served together in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq. Like so many other of America's returning young Veterans, they found the transition back to civilian life to be very difficult. More profoundly, they saw friends who made it through the toughest battle zones succumb to this hidden battle at home. They decided to continue to serve by committing to do something about it
To be produced at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury, Unity For Vets will feature a combination of musicians, celebrities and veterans in a program mixing music and highlighting both the challenges and triumphs of real Veterans. The experience will be complemented and expanded online with activities and social media campaigns including celebrities and high profile artists.
The theme and message of Unity For Vets will be both sober - focusing a spotlight on the issues and needs of America's Veterans in transitioning to civilian life - and inspirational - giving average Americans a way to help not only with money but with their own time and spirit.
During the course of the event a short ceremony will be produced by multi-Emmy Award-winner LeGrande Green (Oprah) featuring Dr. Brenda Wade (Oprah, The Today Show, CNN, Good Morning

Today is the official first day of Fall and as the days get shorter and nights cooler, I tend to start drinking wines with a little more OOMPH than what I might be enjoying on a hot summer day: bigger whites and light-medium bodied reds. Think wines that feature flavors of the season: ripe tree fruits, baking spices, wet forest floor and truffles/mushrooms.

Arizona Stronghold ‘TAZI’ White Blend, Cochise County, Arizona

http://azstronghold.com/tazi.html

This is a full-bodied white blend from our friend Maynard Keenan and Arizona Stronghold Vineyards. Luscious and sunny, evoking tropical fruit and cornucopia of citrus flavors, all beautifully displayed against a finely integrated structure. Very well-balanced, this has energy and lingers with a floral note on the finish. Enjoy with Caesar Salad, Thai Curried Vegetables and Fettuccini Alfredo

Girardet ’14 Vines’ Red Blend, Umqua Valley, Southern Oregon
http://www.girardetwine.com/

This is a super fun wine that just smells like fall—ripe berries and red fruits mixed with smoky oak, forest floor and truffles. True to its name, 14 Vines is a blend of 14 different red grapes, predominately based on Pinot Noir, Merlot and Syrah. Its great with a burger or smoked ribs and also amazing with lasagna.

Breaux Vineyards Cabernet Franc, Loudoun County, Virginia
http://www.breauxvineyards.com/scripts/winepg.cfm/_/12/2008/Lafayette/

Cabernet Franc is one of my favorite grapes—and when done right the wines are bright and spicy with notes of black cherry, forest floor and spicy pepper. Cabernet Franc is a seriously difficult grape to get right however; it ripens unevenly and sometimes tastes “green” with an overly herbaceous green bell pepper flavor.

The Breaux Cabernet Franc is almost perfect---loads of ripe dark fruit mixed with spicy pepper notes plus earth and truffles. Pairs great with game meats or hearty meat-based casseroles.

Marques de la Real Defensa Tempranillo, Navarra, Spain
http://www.siemawines.com/product-portfolio/spain/navarra/marques-de-la-real-defensa/

Another favorite fall wine is Spanish Tempranillo. These hearty reds feature black fruit flavors mixed with earth, truffles and toasty baking spice. Pair with lamb, game meats and hearty casseroles.

Rape is Rape Campaign

The page for overall campaign is http://www.feminist.org/nomoreexcuses/ -- which includes this effort to change the FBI UCR (Uniform Crime Report) definition as well as efforts to get rape kits fully and timely tested.

Regarding the UCR definition "carnal knowledge of a female with force and against her will"

Written more than 80 years ago
Excludes victims of forced anal or oral sex,
Excludes victims of rape with an object,
Excludes male (and probably transgender) victims of rape
Often excludes rape victims whose ability to give consent has been diminished by drugs or alcohol, or by physical or mental disability (because of misinterpretations of both "forced" and "against her will")

This poses several problems:

This archaic definition of what constitutes "real rape" affects perception of the crime by law enforcement, and likely impacts the treatment of rape victims
With such an incomplete description, the FBI has undercounted rapes by hundreds of thousands of cases, resulting in an inaccurate understanding of the scope of the problem.
Without accurate rape statistics, allocation of funding to (and within) local law enforcement to combat and investigate crime will be misdirected away from this terrible crime.

It’s high time for the FBI to recognize this error and modernize the definition to reflect the reality of rape in the United States.

Our request to the FBI: Please update the Uniform Crime Report so that the definition of rape includes all victims.

It's a pretty straightforward campaign – we are putting public pressure on Robert Mueller via the Rape is Rape campaign (part of our larger No More Excuses campaign) as well as working "within the system" so to speak, as we talk with the policy makers in the CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Service), a part of the FBI which works with the UCR system and data.

Summer Sips—Gimme the Acid!

When the heat cranks up, it’s time to cool off with a glass of refreshing white wine. My preference is to turn to high acid whites from cooler grape growing regions of the world. These higher acid wines offer more “refreshment” than flabby, high alcohol wines from warmer growing regions, like California.

Crisp Spanish Whites—from Catalonia and the Basque Region

I love wines from Spain and some of the most exciting whites are produced in the Catalonia Region near Barcelona and the Basque Region of Northwest Spain.

Taste: Blanc Pescador, Emporada, Spain

Wines from the Finger Lakes, New York

The Finger Lakes of New York have the perfect climate for high acid white wines. Among the best are dry Rieslings and dry Vidal Blanc wines. The SHINDIG White is a special wine because I work to create the final blend with winemaker Alie Shaper from Brooklyn Oenology. It may be selfish to say, but the idea behind the wine is something I would like to drink on a hot summer day.

Groooovy Gruner Veltliner from Austria

Gruner Veltliner or Gruner is the main white grape grown in Austria and produces wines that some compare to Pinot Grigio. The hallmark difference is that Gruner has a spicy white pepper thing going on that I really enjoy. Gruner usually has more depth of flavor than inexpensive Pinot Grigio from Italy.

Taste: Love Over Money Gruner Veltliner, Austria

Whites from Alto Adige region of Italy

The Alto Adige region of Northern Italy used to be part of Austria before World War I and many of the wines have German names or are made with German grapes, like Riesling or Muller Thurgau. Because of its higher elevation and mountainous terrain, the grapes grown here tend to retain a good deal of natural acidity which leads to refreshing summer sippers.

U.S. Rates of Autism, ADHD Continue to Rise: Report
Study finds 1 in 6 kids now have a developmental disability, perhaps due to better diagnosis

MONDAY, May 23 (HealthDay News) -- One in six U.S. children now has a developmental disability such as autism, learning disorders or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to new research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
That number appears to be on the rise. In 1997-1999, about 12.8 percent of kids were diagnosed with a developmental disability. That number rose to 15 percent in 2006-2008 -- or an additional 1.8 million U.S. children.
Much of the bump up in cases seems driven by rising rates of autism and ADHD, experts say.
"The most important message here is raising awareness of the importance of this as a health problem and one we need to address," said lead study author Coleen Boyle, director of the U.S. National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities. "Children are our future, and many of these children can grow up to be very productive citizens, so we need to invest in programs to help facilitate their development."
Researchers used data from the 1997-2008 National Health Interview Surveys, an annual, nationally representative survey of U.S. households. The surveys asked parents of children aged 3 to 17 if their children had been diagnosed with ADHD, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, autism, seizures, stuttering or stammering, moderate to profound hearing loss, blindness, learning disorders and/or other developmental delays.
Nearly 10 million U.S. children had been diagnosed with one of those conditions in 2006-2008, according to parental reports.
Much of the increase is being driven by ADHD and autism diagnoses, Boyle said. About 7.6 percent of children were diagnosed with ADHD in 2006-2008, up from 5.7 percent in 1997-1999. About 0.74 percent of kids had received in autism diagnosis in 2006-2008, up from 0.19 percent in 1997-1999.

The number of children slotted under "other developmental delays," a catch-all category, also rose from 3.4 percent to 4.24 percent.
The study is published online May 23 and in the June print issue of Pediatrics.
So, are the number of children with developmental disabilities on the rise, or are parents and doctors getting better at detecting cases? According to Dr. Nancy Murphy, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Council on Children with Disabilities, the increases in these conditions may signify a greater awareness on the part of parents, teachers and health care professionals to identify children with disabilities and get them help.
That could mean that kids that might have been dismissed as simply being "slow" or disobedient in the past may now be getting some extra help to realize their potential, Murphy said.
"It speaks to providers and educators and parents being attentive to when kids are struggling, and that attentiveness is bringing them into systems that can generate diagnoses," Murphy said. "There is a greater willingness to say, 'My kid is struggling -- not because he's a bad kid but he may need a different approach to learning or development or behavior than he or she is getting.'"
One unanswered question is whether greater awareness and efforts to diagnose kids is the only explanation, or if there actually are a greater percentage of kids who are being born with or developing disabilities such as autism and ADHD early in life.
Research has suggested that advanced maternal and paternal age, assisted reproductive technology and greater numbers of premature or late-preterm births, could all be factors in some developmental disabilities, Boyle said. However, those are areas that need much more research, she added.
Improvements in medical technology also means that children born with very serious developmental disabilities, such as neuromuscular or chromosomal disorders, are now surviving conditions that would have killed them in the past. That could also explain some of the uptick in numbers, Murphy said.
In other findings, boys were more likely to have a developmental disability than girls. Hispanic children were the least likely to be diagnosed with a number of disabilities, compared with white and black children.
Children with public insurance, mainly Medicaid, were more likely to have disabilities than those on private insurance plans.
And although rates of autism and ADHD were up, other developmental conditions remained basically steady, including blindness and intellectual disability, while moderate to profound hearing loss showed a significant decline.
