Bubbles for the Holidays

Bubbly can turn an ordinary gathering into something extraordinary. It pairs well with a variety of foods and just adds a little extra OOMP to the occasion.

If Champagne is too pricey, and likely it is at roughly $35-40 a pop, don’t despair as there are plenty of other bubblies available that won’t break the bank.

Here are some general categories to seek out at your favorite wine purveyor:

Cremant de Borgogne: These are sparklers from the Burgundy region of France and often have all the finesse of a fine Champagne at roughly half the cost.

Cremant d’Alsace: These bubblies hail from the Alsace region of eastern France and are also quite comparable to Champagne.

Cava: This is Spanish bubbly made in the same manner as Champagne. Generally, Cava is not as complex and often more floral and fruity.

Prosecco: From Northern Italy, Prosecco is a fresh and light bubbly that is also a good base for Champagne cocktails.

Domestic Bubblies: A wide range are available on the market and while some of the less expensive versions are often not high quality, its best to inquire with your wine purveyor on their better selections in your price range. A few domestic producers of note:

THANKSGIVING WINE TIPS

Gobble Gobble!

Choosing wine for Thanksgiving means trying to pair a wide variety of flavors. Salty, sweet, creamy, herby…it’s a real Smörgåsbord of flavors.

I usually recommend to go with your personal preference but know that this is not the time for buttery, creamy California Chardonnay or big and rich Cabernet Sauvignons.

Typically, sparkling wine is usually the best overall pairing to a wide variety of flavors but if bubbly isn’t your gig, the following types of wines tend to pair best with the flavors found on the Thanksgiving table. Since Thanksgiving is an AMERICAN holiday, try to drink something from the good ‘ol U.S.A!

Whites:

HonorVet.org announced today that ZZ Top Guitarist and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Billy Gibbons, will join rock star performer and “Celebrity Apprentice” winner Bret Michaels and his “Get Your Rock On Tour” with the All-Star line-up that includes Ellis Hall and other special Celebrity guests for the “Unity for Vets” concert on Veterans Day at New York’s NYCB Theatre at Westbury, November 11th.

Today is the official first day of Fall and as the days get shorter and nights cooler, I tend to start drinking wines with a little more OOMPH than what I might be enjoying on a hot summer day: bigger whites and light-medium bodied reds. Think wines that feature flavors of the season: ripe tree fruits, baking spices, wet forest floor and truffles/mushrooms.

Cabernet Franc is one of my favorite grapes—and when done right the wines are bright and spicy with notes of black cherry, forest floor and spicy pepper. Cabernet Franc is a seriously difficult grape to get right however; it ripens unevenly and sometimes tastes “green” with an overly herbaceous green bell pepper flavor.

The Breaux Cabernet Franc is almost perfect---loads of ripe dark fruit mixed with spicy pepper notes plus earth and truffles. Pairs great with game meats or hearty meat-based casseroles.

Regarding the UCR definition "carnal knowledge of a female with force and against her will"

Written more than 80 years ago
Excludes victims of forced anal or oral sex,
Excludes victims of rape with an object,
Excludes male (and probably transgender) victims of rape
Often excludes rape victims whose ability to give consent has been diminished by drugs or alcohol, or by physical or mental disability (because of misinterpretations of both "forced" and "against her will")

This poses several problems:

This archaic definition of what constitutes "real rape" affects perception of the crime by law enforcement, and likely impacts the treatment of rape victims
With such an incomplete description, the FBI has undercounted rapes by hundreds of thousands of cases, resulting in an inaccurate understanding of the scope of the problem.
Without accurate rape statistics, allocation of funding to (and within) local law enforcement to combat and investigate crime will be misdirected away from this terrible crime.

It’s high time for the FBI to recognize this error and modernize the definition to reflect the reality of rape in the United States.

Our request to the FBI: Please update the Uniform Crime Report so that the definition of rape includes all victims.

It's a pretty straightforward campaign – we are putting public pressure on Robert Mueller via the Rape is Rape campaign (part of our larger No More Excuses campaign) as well as working "within the system" so to speak, as we talk with the policy makers in the CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Service), a part of the FBI which works with the UCR system and data.

Summer Sips—Gimme the Acid!

When the heat cranks up, it’s time to cool off with a glass of refreshing white wine. My preference is to turn to high acid whites from cooler grape growing regions of the world. These higher acid wines offer more “refreshment” than flabby, high alcohol wines from warmer growing regions, like California.

Whites from Alto Adige region of Italy

The Alto Adige region of Northern Italy used to be part of Austria before World War I and many of the wines have German names or are made with German grapes, like Riesling or Muller Thurgau. Because of its higher elevation and mountainous terrain, the grapes grown here tend to retain a good deal of natural acidity which leads to refreshing summer sippers.

U.S. Rates of Autism, ADHD Continue to Rise: Report
Study finds 1 in 6 kids now have a developmental disability, perhaps due to better diagnosis

MONDAY, May 23 (HealthDay News) -- One in six U.S. children now has a developmental disability such as autism, learning disorders or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to new research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
That number appears to be on the rise. In 1997-1999, about 12.8 percent of kids were diagnosed with a developmental disability. That number rose to 15 percent in 2006-2008 -- or an additional 1.8 million U.S. children.
Much of the bump up in cases seems driven by rising rates of autism and ADHD, experts say.
"The most important message here is raising awareness of the importance of this as a health problem and one we need to address," said lead study author Coleen Boyle, director of the U.S. National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities. "Children are our future, and many of these children can grow up to be very productive citizens, so we need to invest in programs to help facilitate their development."
Researchers used data from the 1997-2008 National Health Interview Surveys, an annual, nationally representative survey of U.S. households. The surveys asked parents of children aged 3 to 17 if their children had been diagnosed with ADHD, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, autism, seizures, stuttering or stammering, moderate to profound hearing loss, blindness, learning disorders and/or other developmental delays.
Nearly 10 million U.S. children had been diagnosed with one of those conditions in 2006-2008, according to parental reports.
Much of the increase is being driven by ADHD and autism diagnoses, Boyle said. About 7.6 percent of children were diagnosed with ADHD in 2006-2008, up from 5.7 percent in 1997-1999. About 0.74 percent of kids had received in autism diagnosis in 2006-2008, up from 0.19 percent in 1997-1999.

The number of children slotted under "other developmental delays," a catch-all category, also rose from 3.4 percent to 4.24 percent.
The study is published online May 23 and in the June print issue of Pediatrics.
So, are the number of children with developmental disabilities on the rise, or are parents and doctors getting better at detecting cases? According to Dr. Nancy Murphy, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Council on Children with Disabilities, the increases in these conditions may signify a greater awareness on the part of parents, teachers and health care professionals to identify children with disabilities and get them help.
That could mean that kids that might have been dismissed as simply being "slow" or disobedient in the past may now be getting some extra help to realize their potential, Murphy said.
"It speaks to providers and educators and parents being attentive to when kids are struggling, and that attentiveness is bringing them into systems that can generate diagnoses," Murphy said. "There is a greater willingness to say, 'My kid is struggling -- not because he's a bad kid but he may need a different approach to learning or development or behavior than he or she is getting.'"
One unanswered question is whether greater awareness and efforts to diagnose kids is the only explanation, or if there actually are a greater percentage of kids who are being born with or developing disabilities such as autism and ADHD early in life.
Research has suggested that advanced maternal and paternal age, assisted reproductive technology and greater numbers of premature or late-preterm births, could all be factors in some developmental disabilities, Boyle said. However, those are areas that need much more research, she added.
Improvements in medical technology also means that children born with very serious developmental disabilities, such as neuromuscular or chromosomal disorders, are now surviving conditions that would have killed them in the past. That could also explain some of the uptick in numbers, Murphy said.
In other findings, boys were more likely to have a developmental disability than girls. Hispanic children were the least likely to be diagnosed with a number of disabilities, compared with white and black children.
Children with public insurance, mainly Medicaid, were more likely to have disabilities than those on private insurance plans.
And although rates of autism and ADHD were up, other developmental conditions remained basically steady, including blindness and intellectual disability, while moderate to profound hearing loss showed a significant decline.

Amid feverish speculation – especially in the American press – around which Champagne will be served, Decanter.com has it on the highest authority that Pol Roger NV will be served.
Which wines will be served during the wedding breakfast at Buckingham Palace after the ceremony in Westminster Abbey is still a matter of debate: there are unconfirmed reports that an English wine will be on the table.
A spokesman for Pol Roger told Decanter.com a non-vintage had specifically been requested by the Palace.
It will be sipped before the sit-down meal prepared by Anton Mosimann and hosted by Prince Charles.
Pol Roger has a long and honourable association with the British aristocracy. It was the favourite Champagne of Sir Winston Churchill, and in 1984 Pol Roger created the Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill in his honour.

SPRING TIME SAKE

What IS Sake?

Sake is a brewed beverage using special types of rice, yeast, koji mold and spring water. Somewhat like beer in that sake is produced grain (rice) but worlds apart from the flavors of beer. Often sake takes on more of a wine-like flavor profile.

Premium sake is divided into three levels related to how much of the outer rice husk is polished away before brewing. The higher the percentage of polishing, the higher the grade of sake.

Honjozo/Junmai—30% polished
Ginjo—40% polished

Daiginjo—over 50% polished

A HUGE misconception is that sake is always served HOT. While some sake can be enjoyed slightly warmed, many Japanese restaurants in the United States serve very low quality sake which is served hot to mask its flavors. Often these “carafes” of hot sake are poured from a large box not different than boxed wine.

In the restaurants, I usually divide sake into three main categories based on aromas and flavors to help guide guests into selecting the style of sake they will enjoy.

FRAGRANT SAKE
Aromatic and Floral; Perfect for Sashimi and lighter fare. These are the “white wines” of sake and are usually in the Daiginjo or Ginjo polishing level. Almost always better served chilled.

LIGHT & SMOOTH SAKE
Light and Aromatic; Versatile with Foods. These are great beginner and everyday sakes. Usually at the Ginjo or Junmai polishing level. Can be served gently warmed or chilled.

ROBUST & EARTHY SAKE
Rich; Earthy; Good Hot; Pair with Rich Food. Sake in this flavor category is usually at the Junmai or Honjozo polishing level and can be served hot or cold. Can be paired with meats and heavier foods.

UNFILTERED SAKE
Fruity and Creamy; Unfiltered. These often have the appearance of skim milk due to the tiny rice particles left in the liquid. These are generally on the fruitier side and can be enjoyed on their own. I don’t recommend heating this style of sake. Period.

How COULD they? Thieves steal $150 from lemonade stand set up by girls to raise money for gravely ill toddler

Three girls selling lemonade from a stand in order to raise money for a gravely ill toddler were robbed of the $150 they had made.
Authorities say a man and a woman approached the girls and asked them about the stand when they snatched the money jar, scratching one of the girls in the process and running away.
The money was for two-year-old Logan Varnadoe who was born with just a third of a brain, has cortical blindness, deafness and has had multiple surgeries for hernias and intestinal problems, according to 11Alive.com.

He will be airlifted from The Children's Hospital in Macon to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Centre for treatment that isn't available anywhere in Georgia.
Amber Umbarger, 21, from Warner Robins, was arrested on the scene and has been charged with three counts of robbery by snatching.
Police are still looking for Gage Turner, 20,also from Warner Robins.

Logan's cousin Chelsea Edwards and her two friends are still recovering from the shock.
Logan and Chelsea's grandmother Judy Bailey told 11Alive.com: 'I still cant get over it. My granddaughter was lying on the ground crying, devastated.

'She's been really having a hard time at night, the last two nights. I said "It's going to be okay. We're going to get there. One way or another we're going to get to Cincinnati, all of us. Don't you worry".'
Houston County Sheriff's Lt John Holland called the robbery 'a first' for him in his years of crime-fighting, saying: 'I've never had a case where a child at a lemonade stand has been robbed.'

Today, the FBI, with Fairfax County, Prince William County, Prince George’s County, Leesburg, New Haven, and Cranston Police Departments launched a digital billboard campaign to assist in a serial rape investigation involving 12 sexual assaults or attempted sexual assaults between 1997 and 2009 by the same offender. Each of these assaults is linked by DNA.

Digital billboards featuring composite sketches of the offender are now running in Connecticut, Maryland, Rhode Island and Virginia, where the attacks and attempts have occurred as well as neighboring states, New Jersey, New York and Delaware. Since the start of the FBI’s digital billboard partnership at least 39 cases have been solved as a direct result from tips from the public. “These billboards give each local police departments, and the FBI, an added edge to identifying, locating and apprehending the subject,” said Ronald Hosko, Special Agent in Charge of the Criminal Division, FBI, Washington Field Office. “The public is the most important tool law enforcement has for solving crime.”

Fairfax County Police Department has launched a dedicated website, www.EastCoastRapist.com, which provides composites and additional description of the offender. “We have the DNA linking the offender, but we need someone to recognize and identify him,” said John Kelly, Detective with the Fairfax County Police Department.

Victims in the assaults have been black, white and Hispanic females. The offender generally approaches the victims outdoors on foot and threatens them with a weapon; usually a knife or a handgun. In two of the earliest assaults, the offender approached the victims on a bike. The offender sometimes wears a black mask or hooded sweatshirt to conceal his face. After approaching the victim, the offender asks the victim for money, giving the victim the impression that she is being robbed, but does not take anything after the assault is over. 1. a GLASS JAR (Mason jar, large Mayonnaise jar, the jar should
have a wide mouth/top)
2. Coarse Salt (coarse kosher salt is in most grocery stores)
3. 6 copper pennies
4. 1 piece of silver (sterling silver, or a real silver dime)
5. A piece of 6”X6” (or larger) wax paper or Saran Wrap
6. A rubber band
7. Water

To make your SALT CURE, you will fill the jar half way full with the coarse salt, then you will finish filling the jar the rest of the way with water (always put the salt in first).
Then you will drop in the 6 copper pennies and 1 piece of silver.
(These should rest on top of the salt.)
Cover the mouth of the jar with the Saran Wrap or wax paper,
and hold it in place with the rubber band. (NO metal twisty ties)

Place this in the EAST CORNER of your
home, office, and the room where you spend most of your time

This treatment is to:
BLOCK BAD ENERGY of all kinds, poor health, bad thoughts,
any type of bad or negative energy
THIS TREATMENT WILL REMAIN IN PLACE FOR THE
ENTIRE YEAR, so place it in an area will it will not
be disturbed or moved around.

It's been 25 years since "a brain, a beauty, a jock, a rebel and a recluse" spent an unforgettable Saturday together in high school detention. But rather than going the way of acid-washed jeans and VHS, "The Breakfast Club" seems to take on more cultural resonance with each passing year, as new generations of teens flock to the movie, finding themselves reflected perfectly onscreen.

We know what has happened in the lives of film's stars since 1985: Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Anthony Michael Hall and Emilio Estevez have continued to act in film, television and theater. Most of them reunited at the Oscars in March in memory of the film's late writer and director, John Hughes, and again Monday in New York for a 25th anniversary screening.

But what about the iconic characters those actors brought to life onscreen -- what might have happened in their lives over the past quarter-century? When asked if he'd ever make a sequel to the film, Hughes once told a reporter: "I know everybody would love to watch it. But I'm too fond of those characters."

I for one, am too fond of them not to imagine.

Allison Reynolds (Ally Sheedy): Allison majored in women's studies at Oberlin, then moved to Seattle, where she spent the early '90s working as a barista at a fair-trade coffee bar. She left town right around the time it stopped being cool to live there, worked as a volunteer for the first Lillith Fair and then moved to Austin, where she went to grad school and became an adolescent psychologist. She recently wrote a best-selling book that encourages teens to retain their individuality and to focus on inner beauty. She often tells her teenage patients, "When you get old, your heart doesn't have to die."

Brian Johnson (Anthony Michael Hall): Despite getting an F in shop class, Brian wrote a brilliant college-application essay inspired by his poignant response to Principal Vernon's detention-day assignment to the group (a 1,000-word paper answering the question: Who do you think you are?). That essay, titled "Does That Answer Your Question?," won him a scholarship to MIT. He later moved to Silicon Valley to become an Internet entrepreneur, but after turning down offers to sell his startup for $300 million, he wound up with nothing when the tech bubble burst. He realized, though, that there was a future in social networking. As an early investor in MySpace, he made enough money to impress and later marry a swimsuit model who makes him PB and J with the crusts cut off. He recently endowed a new library at Shermer High and keeps a ceramic elephant lamp in his office to remind him how far he's come.

Andy Clark (Emilio Estevez): The stressed-out jock used to wish that his knee would give out, and it finally did -- not on the wrestling mat, but during a particularly intense punch-dancing session. During his treatment, he realized his true calling and went on to become a physical therapist, much to the frustration of his overbearing father. He once ran into Allison at O'Hare; they hadn't talked since that day in detention, but he asked her if she still had the badge she tore off his letterman jacket. For the most part, people from school have lost touch with him -- he never comes to reunions.

Claire Standish (Molly Ringwald): Claire and John Bender began a intense, clandestine romance after their day in detention; it was followed by an equally intense breakup. She moved to New York to study fashion at FIT but cheerfully put her career aspirations on hold after she met a banker at a Tommy Hilfiger show. They married, then she "squeezed out a few puppies" (as Bender predicted) and lived the life of a Wall Street wife: apartment on Park Avenue, summers in the Hamptons, winters in Aspen, sushi every night. She played tennis at her club and had lunch at the right places, but still hated "having to go along with everything my friends say." After sticking by her husband through his firm's accounting scandal in the early 2000s and a short-selling scandal at decade's end, she divorced him when she learned that he was seeing a younger woman. Recently, she and her kids moved back home to Shermer. She never stopped thinking about Bender and is almost ready to accept his friend request on Facebook.

John Bender (Judd Nelson): After spending the remainder of 1985 in Saturday detentions, Bender dropped out of high school and spent a few years feeling aimless and working odd jobs in auto repair shops. But when Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, it really ticked him off. He never liked malevolent authority figures, so he joined the Army, joking that it was his way of saying, "Eat my shorts, Saddam Hussein!" Appreciating the structure and discipline of military service, Bender stayed in uniform until the mid-1990s, when he returned to Chicago (he couldn't afford Shermer). He never married -- in part because he never got over Claire. After Principal Vernon retired, Bender was invited to speak at a career day at his old high school. The experience inspired him to do something to make students' lives better, so he went to college and got his master's in education. He went on to become one of the most beloved teachers at Shermer High and currently serves as its principal.

Going into fall, I tend to start drinking wines with a little more OOMPH than
what I might be enjoying on a hot summer day: bigger whites and light-medium bodied reds. Think wines that feature flavors of the season: ripe tree fruits, baking spices, wet forest floor and truffles/mushrooms.

Greco is the name of the grape used in this complex little wine. Aromas of ripe tree fruits—peach, apricot, apple mixed with wet stone, forest floor and almond notes. Pinot Noir is a great wine choice moving into the fall, especially those with earthy, fall like flavors. Look for dark cherry and plum fruit mixed with truffles and forest floor. Pinot is always a favorite for grilled salmon, seared duck and dishes that feature mushrooms.

Sangiovese is the great grape of Chianti. The difference between Italian Sangiovese and “New World” Sangiovese is mainly the “fruitiness” factor. Chianti and Italian Sangiovese based wines tend toward a rustic style with tart cherry, earth and vanilla spice notes while wines like the Dos Cabezas are almost reminiscent of Pinot Noir with sweet dark cherry fruit along with earth and vanilla spice. Both types of wine are very suited for pizza, especially the SHINDIG!

These wines are not only refreshing, but often have lower alcohol content, so DRINK up!

Txakoli from the Basque Region of Northern Spain

One of my absolute favorite white wines is Txakoli (pronounced Chacoli) from the Basque Region of Spain. These zippy little whites are produced from native Basque region grapes and are reminiscent of Pinot Grigio. Think loads of green apple, lemon citrus and a zesty finish. Pair these wines with all sorts of light seafood, especially raw fish and oysters on the half shell.

Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand

Always a popular summer wine, Sauvignon Blanc is another high acid white with lemon-citrus, grapefruit and green grass flavors. Some of my favorite examples of Sauvignon Blanc hail from the cool growing region of Marlborough, at the tip of the South Island of New Zealand. Always refreshing, these wines are perfect with salads and lighter seafood; again, think raw fish and oysters on the half shell.

Wine: Ten Sisters Sauvignon Blanc 2009, Marlborough, New Zealand

Verdejo from Rueda, Spain

Sometimes this grape is mistaken as the sister of Sauvignon Blanc because of their similarities in flavors: lemon-citrus, green grass and apricot.The Spanish Verdejo grape is usually a little less acidic than Sauvignon Blanc but still very flavorful and refreshing nonetheless. Pairs well with similar foods as Sauvignon Blanc.

Wine: Gran Cardiel Verdejo 2009, Rueda, Spain

Crisp Whites from Finger Lakes, New York

I find that the Finger Lakes of New York is one of the most exciting American wine regions for crisp, cool-climate white wines. It also happens to be a very stunning and picturesque region with its series of long narrow lakes and vineyards flanking the neighboring hillsides. You will find a variety of interesting and refreshing whites from this region, including whites made from the grapes Riesling, Cayuga and Vidal Blanc. Usually its best to inquire on these wines before purchasing because sometimes there are sweeter versions amidst the dry and crisp wines.

The wine I chose today is the perfect example of a dry and refreshing Vidal Blanc and Riesling blend that I help to produced with Alie Shaper of Brooklyn Oenology.

Couple Survive After Being Hit by 40-Ton Flying Whale

Ralph Mothes and Paloma Werner have a whale of a tale to tell after a 40-ton Southern Right Whale leaped out of the water and crashed onto their yacht while they were sailing on Sunday off Cape Town, South Africa.

With a stunning photo of the incident now making the rounds worldwide, the couple, who are South African sailing instructors, are describing their terror at the time and relief when they realized they had survived.

"Suddenly I saw this huge monster shape come up out of the water on my port side," Mothes said Thursday on NBC's Today show. "It just happened in an instant. It was quite frightening."

The young whale broke the boat's mast and damaged the cabin before falling back into the water, leaving behind barnacles, blubber and skin but no blood – suggesting it wasn't seriously injured.

Thankfully, neither were the humans, who were left to marvel at the incredible incident. "It was an awesome experience," Werner said, before quickly adding: "We wouldn't want to repeat it."

As a DC blogger and vino enthusiast, I’ve chosen some excellent boutique vineyard wines that compliment everyone from the keg-standing sorority girl to the fist-pumping guidette, and everything in between. Alongside the best sommelier in DC, Mr. Andrew Stover, we’ve selected the wines to best outfit three very distinct (notice how I don’t say distinguished) types of women and one for the stereo-typical Washingtonian male.

1-Sauvignon Blanc: This is for the Kappa Alpha Delta, Gamma Theta Beta, Lamba Omega Iota sorority girl. It’s just as clean and crisp as any Ralph Lauren polo shirt and is as crystal clear as the pearls around their neck. It’s perfect for a girls’ night in alongside popcorn while watching Legally Blonde and makes any girl feel as adorable as Elle Woods. Plus, the fruity notes add an interesting twist to its finish.

2-Sparkling Rose: This is for the bitch, the snob, or the ultimate frenemy. Think about that hot, sexy career woman who tries to sabotage all of her colleagues to get ahead. She drives a fast car, has thigh high Louboutains, lots of Botox, and has zero time for men. She treats herself, is powerful, and doesn’t take shit from anyone. Though she can be sweet, the Sparkling Rose has a strong edge on its finish.

3-Chardonnay: Buttery, complex, and tasty, this is for the acrylic nails and hoop earing-wearing Jersey Shore guidette. Drinking this is a bedazzled wine glass while fist pumping, Snookie would love a glass with it not just because it tastes so damn good, but because it goes great with her family’s Italian cuisine. Wear all of the animal print that you can find, poof your hair, and don’t forget your Ed Hardy; this Chardonnay is big, loud, and unforgettable.

4-Merkin Chupacabra Red: For the type of guy who likes loafers, wind-breakers, comb-overs, but still appreciates the finer things in life. After downing the Chupacabra, he'll probably end up at Third Edition afterwards looking for his dream date who will probably be donned in Lily Pulitzer (vom). It doesn't help the situation that the lead singer of Tool helped to produce this wine, either.

A Chinese toddler aged three has become mysteriously addicted to smoking and drinking after a car accident. Little Ya Wen lives in a shelter with her parents who collect and sell rubbish for money.

Her mother Gao explained the little girl was knocked down by a speeding van last year.She was rushed to hospital where doctors managed to stabilise her. She woke up a week later and recovered fully after a couple of months - but her mum soon found her secretly smoking cigarettes.

Wine & Chocolate for Valentine’s!

Valentine’s Day is Sunday, so what better than to wind down the week with some wine and chocolate, right? Pairing wine with chocolate can be a little tricky and its important to remember a few tips, especially that the wine should be at least as sweet than the chocolate or else your pairing could end up bitter or sour.

White Chocolate

White Chocolate is more mellow and buttery and works amazingly well with Moscato
d’ Asti from Italy, Orange Muscat dessert wines and most late harvest white dessert wines.

Wine Tasted: Flare Moscatel NV, Valencia, Spain

Milk Chocolate

There are a few different directions you can go with milk chocolate. You could consider a lighter red, like Pinot Noir or a lighter-bodied Merlot or try semi-sweet Riesling, white late harvest wines and ice wines. A nice Ruby Port also complements well.

Dark Chocolate with High Cacao Percentage

Dark Chocolate is generally slightly bitter because of its high percentage of cacao. These types of chocolate pair best with either a Tawny or Vintage Port or a robust red wine—even better when the wine has its own notes of chocolate. Cabernet and Zinfandels work well and even Merlot.

The George Mason women's basketball team will return home after a three-game road swing on Sunday, hosting Old Dominion on WBCA Pink Zone Day. Tip-off against the Lady Monarchs is set for 2 p.m.

The Lady Monarchs come to Fairfax with a 14-10 record and 9-5 mark in CAA play, seeding them fourth in the conference standings. ODU has lost two of its last three games, including a 66-51 defeat at Hofstra on Thursday afternoon. Tiffany Green leads the Lady Monarch offense with 14.6 points per game, and she is averaging 9.4 rebounds per contest as well.

Mason will look to snap the nation's longest losing streak against one opponent, as ODU leads the all-time series 44-0 dating back to the 1974-75 season.

When the two teams met earlier this season, Mason led early, but the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs proved too much as they handed the Patriots a 73-42 defeat in CAA action on Jan. 15 at the Constant Center. The Patriots (2-13, 0-4) were plagued by shooting woes in the game, as ODU (9-5, 4-0) held a 41.7-to-26.3 percent field goal shooting advantage. The Lady Monarchs controlled the paint as well, outscoring Mason 38-to-14 while also out-rebounding the Patriots, 48-to-35. Mason was led by 10 points and eight rebounds from sophomore Brittany Poindexter, while all five ODU starters reached double figures, led by 16 points from Jasmine Parker.

Sunday is Mason's PinkZone Day. The WBCA Pink ZoneTM initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The WBCA's charity of choice is the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer FundTM, in partnership with The V Foundation. Wine Trends for 2010

Say goodbye to that dreary 2009…and hopefully you kicked back some bubbles on New Year’s Eve.

Welcome to the next decade and an exciting decade it shall be. Sometime between 2010 and 2012, the United States will become the world’s largest wine consuming nation, surpassing France. For the last half-century the baby boomers have dominated our consumer world, including wine, with their immense marketing clout. It's time for the Boomers to get out of the way. The Echo Boomers also known as Generation Y or Millennials are taking over. Born between 1979 and 1994, at 70-plus million they rival the size of the baby boomer generation but they have taken to wine at a much earlier age. According to The Wine Council, between 2003 and 2007 Gen Y accounted for 46 percent of the growth in the American wine industry.

A few trends to watch:

Bubbles—this is an exciting trend as sparkling wine sees an uptick in sales here in the United States. Bubbly is no longer seen as just a special occasion wine and many consumers are finding out how versatile bubbly can be with various foods. And with so many value-priced sparklers on the market (remember last month’s grocery store tasting), bubbly is no longer seen as a luxury.

Malbec—will continue to be a hot commodity, especially from Argentina. But expect to see domestic Malbecs rise to the occasion especially from California and Washington State.

Local Local Local—its been a movement for years, but the trend will continue with more local/regional wineries churning out better and better wines. Even the largest wine competition in American saw some daunting numbers recently as the San Francisco Chronicle wine competition featured wines from 23 states. Three gold medals were awarded to wines from….NEW JERSEY!

Value—Value priced wines in the under $20 category will continue to dominate as consumers pull back spending on large ticket wines.

Lower Alcohol—Yes indeed, there is trend toward lower alcohol levels and more judicious use of oak to create more food friendly, versatile wines.

Bubbles for the Holidays

Bubbly can turn an ordinary gathering into something extraordinary. It pairs well with a variety of foods and just adds a little extra OOMP to the occasion.

If Champagne is too pricey, and likely it is at roughly $35-40 a pop, don’t despair as there are plenty of other bubblies available that won’t break the bank.

Here are some general categories to seek out at your favorite wine purveyor:

Cremant de Borgogne: These are sparklers from the Burgundy region of France and often have all the finesse of a fine Champagne at roughly half the cost.

Cremant d’Alsace: These bubblies hail from the Alsace region of eastern France and are also quite comparable to Champagne.

Cava: This is Spanish bubbly made in the same manner as Champagne. Generally, Cava is not as complex and often more floral and fruity.

Prosecco: From Northern Italy, Prosecco is a fresh and light bubbly that is also a good base for Champagne cocktails.

Domestic Bubblies: A wide range are available on the market and while some of the less expensive versions are often not high quality, its best to inquire with your wine purveyor on their better selections in your price range. A few domestic producers of note:

Skin Care in your 40s

Just because you’re about to hit the big 4-0 (or are already there), doesn’t mean you have to look like a scary ‘ol cougar. Chelsea Kaplan came in to explain what goes on with your skin in your 40s, and what over-the-counter beauty products are best for keeping yourself looking young.

Here’s what’s going on:

Uneven skin tone: By your 40s, you skin has endured quite a lot of environmental damage – sun, pollution, smoke (if you were a puffer), etc. By your 40s, sadly, that damage is pretty visible. Your skin may be a bit more red and blotchy or your skin tone may be uneven due to sunspots.

Skin dryness: Skin becomes drier as you age, as your skin naturally decreases its oil production as you get older. As a result, dry skin looks a little flaky, and certainly less “plump” and radiant. Think of a wilted plant versus a freshly-watered one, and you get the picture.

Fine lines and wrinkles: As you age, your body’s natural collagen production mechanisms slow and the collagen that already exists in your body begins breaking down. Collagen, a type of fibrous protein that supports and connects bodily tissue, works with elastin to give strength and firmness to your face, keeping skin firm, flexible, tight and youthful-looking. By your 40s, this decrease in collagen production and retention leads to skin looking less “plump”, which increases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Also contributing to the appearance of those fine lines and wrinkles: all the environmental damage listed above (you know about sun causing wrinkles!) and dryness, which makes wrinkles appear more pronounced, as skin isn’t as plump as it could be.

Never fear, ladies – there IS help! Here’s what you can do:

Of course, there are all kinds of prescription-strength medicines, cosmetic dermatological procedures and plastic surgery procedures that can correct these age-related issues. If you aren’t quite ready to take the plunge, here are some over-the counter products that will get your 40something skin looking great.
